Palermo. Situated in the centre of the Mediterranean, birthplace of many ancient civilizations, Palermo has always been a mixture of western and eastern cultures. It is strategic stop off point for merchant and commercial ships and over centuries has been under the rule of many civilizations. It is, therefore a cosmopolitan city full of different races, languages and religions. |  |
From it's position, Monreale overlooks the Conca d'oro and for this reason the Arabs built a hamlet here. The beauty of the village is linked to Norman times. It's most important tourist attraction is the world famous S. Maria La Nuova cathedral and monastery. The cloister of the monastery is not to be missed as it is one of the best examples of Islamic architecture in the world. |  |
